KFC free chicken day

By , 04/27/2009 6:45 pm

While Americans scramble to Kentucky Fried Chicken today to get their free piece of grilled bird here’s a question or two that needs to be asked.

Just where DID the Colonel get his chicken???

How did this chicken live?
In a ultra-confined group home of de-beaked, antibiotic fed, genetically deteriorated poultry?

OR

was it raised responsibly; free range with adequate fresh air and natural sun light. Allowed to feed on natural pastures??

Chickens that are housed indoors and deprived of greens, become artificially low in omega-3s.

A recent study, funded by the USDA, tested chickens raised on fresh green pasture and compared them with chickens raised in confinement houses. The pasture raised chickens had 21 percent less total fat, 30 percent less saturated fat, and 28 percent fewer calories. The breast meat tested so lean that the USDA could classify it as “fat free”. The meat also had 50 percent more vitamin A and 100 percent more omega-3 fatty acids.

People with ample amounts of omega-3 fatty acids in their diet are less likely to have high blood pressure or an irregular heartbeat. They are also less likely to have a heart attack.

In animal studies, omega-3s have slowed the growth of a wide array of cancers and kept them from spreading.

Omega-3 fatty acids reduce bronchial hypersensitivity in asthma patients.

  • Animals and poultry raised on grain have a much higher percentage of omega-6 fatty acids (saturated fat) and a low level of omega-3 fatty acids.

And then the after life……

Is this new grilled entree marinated in a slurry of flavor enhancing
 Excitotoxins

so that it smells and tastes delish but short circuits our health.

(Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s, all have been linked to MSG consumption as well as a host of other health problems short and long term.)

Remember the old saying

“there’s no such thing as a free lunch” ..

Indiscriminately eating fast food can cost you your health…which is far more important than your wealth.

KFC can keep their free chicken…. I’ll cook my own :0)

Keep Food REAL!

A Freezer Full of Health

The bread never was baked yesterday. The soup was made. Delicious! But since there was a loaf left from last week’s baking I didn’t bother.

Another kitchen duty presented itself. The grass feed beef that I purchased was delivered.

I didn’t think that it would be ready until later in the week. I needed to clear a path to the freezer since the garage was strewn with boxes; empty and half unpacked from our recent move.

This time I purchased a quarter of a beef. Last time it was a half. We still have roasts, steaks and soup bones from the half. It seems we go through the hamburger faster than everything else.

We are hamburger lovers. My husband, The Suburban Gringo, is burger maker extraordinaire. But what he does that is truly awesome is his style of Mexican food. Beef chimichangas being one of his specialties.

A freezer full of healthy, locally raised beef, poultry and lamb is a true blessing. The beef and lamb are grass fed and free of harmful antibiotics and hormones.

The poultry was an interesting project. A friend of ours, who lives on a small acreage homestead, raised 50 chickens for us. They were raised free to roam and cluck about and fed organic feed. They got a bit big before they were butchered. The average is 9 lbs.

I wanted a chicken for most Friday night dinners for a year.

These lovely birds give us three meals a piece, in addition to healthy stock made from their carcass.

The health benefits for our family are immeasurable. To eliminate causes of disease is the best insurance plan for your family. My children are being raised with pesticide free foods.

There young developing bodies are not bombarded with insane amounts of estrogen hormones commonly used in the meat and egg industry. They are getting essential fatty acids that only properly raised animals can provide.

We are blessed to have control over our food supply. As parents and caregivers we make it a top priority to have a supply of organic foods that are properly and ethically produced in our larder.

There is great satisfaction and contentment that comes from wholesome food choices. We aren’t wealthy but we eat than better kings!

Check out local meat and poultry offerings in your area. Check my links for sources of information…

Well off to the morning tea, and on to make bread..I really HAVE to today.

Blessings and Keep Food Real!
