Slow Cooker Morning

By , 02/16/2009 12:50 pm

I wake to the smell of simmering beef broth mingled with the warm aroma of breakfast porridge.

The porridge will be done in a couple of hours. It is only 5 a.m. The beef/ bone broth won’t be done until Wednesday.

I am learning to use my slow cookers to keep my kitchen producing the healthiest food I can manage.

It takes just a little effort to put something in the cooker and let time do the rest of the work.

Mondays are for bread baking and usually I make soup to accompany the fresh loaves. Again the slow cooker works its wonders. With the wash and chop of a few vegetables; onions, carrots, celery and garlic, I am more than half way done with dinner.

Today’s soup is split pea and beef. The meat from the beef bones will be used. For added richness a combination of chicken stock, from last week, combined with a cup or two of the fresh broth will form the stock.

I can’t decide if I want crisp bread or crackers with the soup or a nice soft roll…… I will have to wait for inspiration..Perhaps it will come after my morning tea.

Have great week and remember,

Keep food REAL!
